If you were to choose a college or university, what do you think are the factors that are needed to be considered? Of course you’ll look for possibilties, right? Is it the healthy social environment? The state-of-the-art facilities? Maybe, the course availabilities? How about the student-friendly class schedules? Are you also thinking about affordable tuition fees? Or an institution with highly-qualified professors? Well, lucky you! You’re currently living at a time when a certain institution still offers all of those. So what university do you think has it all? Let’s start to talk about that.

The best challenge in entering college is deciding which universities to apply to. Whether it be peer influence or your parents’ advice, it is still very important to weigh things properly and not to be mistaken with the university/college choice. But if you’re one of those students who seek for diploma not just for ‘crisp’ and such, but also to succeed in a future profession, University of Mindanao is here to help you.

Opened to public last July 1946 and owned by CPA-Lawyer Guillermo E. Torres Sr., the expansion of Mindanao Colleges (now University of Mindanao) was witnessed from 1949 to 1962. It was written on the university’s handbook that, “Branches were established to give more educational opportunities to many financially deprived students in the neighboring provinces of Davao City. These are MC Digos and MC Sta. Ana in 1949; MC Peñaplata and MC Tagum in 1950; MC Guianga, MC Tibungco and MC Panabo in 1951; MC Cotabato in 1959 and MC Bansalan in 1962”.

Also, the University of Mindanao is known as a non-sectarian school offering the most number of academic programs in this part of the country. In addition, it is regarded as the largest private university in Mindanao and cited as one of the most number of PACUCOA accredited programs in the Philippines. UM is also the first academic institution in Mindanao with an institutional ISO 9001:2008 Certification. In addition, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted an Autonomous Status to UM and it is the first PACUCOA school in Mindanao granted Level III for various academic programs and one of the top five (5) schools in the Philippines with the most number of accreditation.

Furthermore, the quality policy of the university is, “…committed to excellence and total quality in education”. So this means that the university is truly a nice and possible way of excelling and becoming the professional you dreamed to be. This is displayed by the number of topnotchers that the university holds.

Recent proof are the four UM graduates who were top passers in the August 2019 Social Worker Licensure examination, and one of them is Relene Pascual Delos Reyes. She graduated last April 2019 as Cum Laude of Bachelor of Science in Social Work and now she is also known as one of UM’s pride for placing top 10 on her course’s licensure exam.

Right to left: Jerena Piencenaves (top3), Habib Dela Cruz Pagilogon, (top 7), Jonathea Paz Baloca (top 8), and Relene Delos Reyes (top 10)

“I chose UM for the following reasons: first, the school has open admission. Second, the students get to choose their schedules, which was a big turn on for me since I am not a morning person. In my entire college, most of the time I had afternoon classes”, she said.

UM’s way of letting each student choose whether they want morning, afternoon, or evening classes is also a great help for working students who manage time for work and school. Though University of Mindanao is known to be an institution wherein ‘dali makasulod pero lisod makagawas’, it still didn’t discouraged her.

“If I am to describe my experience, it would be fun and exciting, and exhausting yet very fulfilling”, she said. It was fun and exciting for her because she got the chance to meet a lot of people even those with different courses. This proves that UM has a healthy social environment. Further, she said that most of her professors were approachable, excellent and really have the heart of teaching; proving that the institution is also the home of highly-qualified professors. She added also that the facilities are conducive for learning. It cannot be denied that UM really has state-of-the-art facilities that are a big help to each student.

“Exhausting because for four years, I never imagined that all the stresses I have experienced in high school were nothing compared to the stresses in college. Above all, it was fulfilling because at the end of the day, I know I have always given my best in everything and it made good results”, she stated.

I, as a college student also of University of Mindanao, knows how hard it is to study in an institution that challenge you to reach your course’s expectations. Little did I know that it is one way of helping you become more disciplined and knowledgeable in your chosen field.

“I truly believe that the UM’s Outcome-based Education made the students stand out. The university has its own way of making sure that it produces competent graduates”, she continued.

In board courses like hers, there will be a Competency Appraisal subject that a student should take before he/she could graduate.

In an interview conducted by one of my classmates last time about the university’s standing in terms of passing rate and licensure performance, Dr. Pedrito Castillo III (VP of Academic Services Planning) said, “Competency Appraisal course is difficult compared to licensure program, that’s why we are no longer shock when we top the exam”. Moreover, Ms. Delos Reyes emphasized that, “Competency Appraisal is, indeed, an edge for UM students because as early as this time, they will be immersed with books and a lot of drills that will develop their critical thinking in analyzing situations as the actual exam is mostly situational. It is one of the school’s way to examine if the students are ready to face the world of work”.

Indeed a great strategy to surely produce competent-enough individuals!

All of these are of great offer. But what if you’re a student who’s financially challenged? Have you thought of ways on how to? UM has still an answer for that! This institution offers few scholarship grants for those who deserve and will be qualified to one of the following:

  • High School Honorees (for freshmen)
  • Honor Society (for those who already have 1 year residency in the university)
  • Makabayan Artist Ensemble
  • UM Chorale
  • UM Band
  • Athletes (of DAVRAA & PRISAA)
  • Working Scholar – STAP (Student’s Assistant Program)

Ms. Delos Reyes has really a bunch to share about University of Mindanao. In my interview with her, she proudly stated, “Often times as a student, we feel that we are simply just to comply and agree on everything we are ought to do. But throughout college years, the University of Mindanao never underestimated the importance of the students’ opinion, because they listen. From rants online, to the campus’ fuss, you know that the administration gets involved with even the small details the students are concerned about. Thus, they address the problem, formulate and impose solutions for the betterment”.

How could you not be admired with the freedom that the institution could give you? Is this still not a comfort?

Releasing of incentives to board topnotchers with UM Board of Trustees

These pictures from Ms. Delos Reyes show how each student is assisted to the road of becoming an excellent one.

Back to my starting question, if you were to choose a college or university, what do you think are the factors that are needed to be considered? Well all those answers are the common factors but it’s time now to also look not only with how comfortable you can be during your stay in the university, but also on what you can become in the future because of the assistance that they can offer all throughout.

To enter a private non-sectarian school like University of Mindanao is already a privilege and an opportunity to become successful beings. Though UM offers every help that are available, it is still upto you on how you make use of it. Ms. Delos Reyes even said, “I did not regret getting my bachelor’s degree in this university as it provided a dynamic and supportive academic environtment. I also admire their unfailing adherence to its commitment to provide a quality yet affordable education to students and their very supportive Top Management”.

I agree with her that there are many things that will confuse us with our choices to whether or not study in this university or wanting to drop your subjects. But never stop pushing forward, especially in uncertainty. This is when your drive to success will be tested and strengthen for all of these are for greater purpose and bigger reward.

Entering University of Mindanao is not a ticket to force you to become a topnotcher. It is a ticket for you to seemly enhance your knowledge and skills in a way that will greatly challenge you, and will give you the greatest reward of all — getting a degree and becoming a successful professional. Yet thoughts cannot be denied that being a topnotcher is still an extra reward.

Ms. Relene Delos Reyes, together with all top passers in different courses produced by UM is just a form of motivation to everyone that as long as you’ll strive hard, you’ll achieve something in life. Maybe not becoming a topnotcher but becoming a competent individual, of course with the help of University of Mindanao. With everything that Ms. Delos Reyes said, she added that the best description for a UM experience is ‘difficult and rewarding, all at the same time’.

Indeed, as what the institution’s philosophy says, UM really has the ability to polish diamonds in the rough in order for them to rise from the ranks!

Are you still not convinced to become a UMian? Be one and be proud!

Plastics being used everyday in different parts of the world are commonly known as one of the major causes that destroys our nature and also some living animals. Why? Plastic is considered as a material that Earth cannot digest. It takes hundreds to thousands of years to decompose. These can now be ingested by wildlife living on land and in the ocean that can harm them or can harm us also as it can contaminate our food chain.

According to Earth Island’s Journal about ‘Plastic Pollution Coalition’, “Plastics are not destroying our environment and compromising our health by themselves. It is our use of them that has catastrophic consequences. A material that lasts hundreds of years in the environment should never be used for applications that last seconds, minutes, hours, or even days”. And we cannot deny that in our everyday lives, the commonly used plastics are plastic bags, bottles, and even straws and disposable spoons and forks in fast food chains. That is why humans are contributors of plastic pollution.

As of now, we can really say that we failed as humans. But how can we put an end on this failure? How can we succeed on healing the Earth?

World Wide Fun for Nature states on one of their article concerning the scourge of single-use plastics in the Philippines that, “The low cost and convenience of plastic sachets, as well as inefficient waste disposal, has made the Philippines one of the world’s leading plastic polluters, with tremendous negative impacts on the environment”. Click here to view full article.

In addition, South China Morning Post published an article saying that, “A 2015 report on plastic pollution by the Ocean Conservancy charity and the McKinsey Centre for Business and Environment ranked the Philippines as the third-largest source of discarded plastic that ends up in the ocean, behind two other Asian nations: China and Indonesia”. This is such a shame for us Filipinos. They added that, “The Philippines generates 2.7 million tonnes of plastic waste annually and 20 per cent – or half a million tonnes – of that leaks into the oceans”. Click here to view full article.

To save the Earth from fully dying, we must start first in our country and we can do this by simply making a move in the particular place where we live.

This is not a challenge to Brgy. Lapu Lapu, R. Castillo, Agdao, Davao City. Wherein a waste museum was built to recycle plastics and invent it to become something of use or of aesthetic display instead of letting plastic garbages float in the sea. The present baranggay officials, as well as the residents, are taking this chance of being responsible for the environment.

Together with some of my classmates, we were able to have a chance to talk with Kagawad Elbern Mark Almoroto, committee on solid waste management under Brgy. Lapu Lapu, Agdao. According to him, this waste museum has a main goal of setting the minds of young and adult residents in their baranggay that garbage, such as plastics, can still be considered as resources. And in such way, they can help minimize the single-use plastics. This act of care for the environment has been continuing since September 2018.

“Ang tumong ani among museum kay magka-mindset ang mga dagko ug mga bata na ang basura kay resources. Para pud makatabang ang tanan na mabawasan ang mga plastic ug at the same time maka buhat ug mga produkto na pwede pagkakitaan”

Kagawad Almoroto

This kind of concern for the environment is also visible to another organization’s concern. There is an independent global campaigning organization that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment, and to promote peace called ‘Greenpeace’. This non-governmental organization runs from different places in the world and Philippines is one of its allies. Greenpeace views that “By 2050, it is predicted that there will be 12 billion tonnes of plastic waste in the natural environment.” With this, one of their ways to expose plastic menace is through social media and more than 3 million people around the world have joined Greenpeace to urge companies to stop polluting our planet with throwaway plastics.

Moreover, corporations like Nestle, Unilever, Coca-Cola, Danone, and Johnson & Johnson are urged to invest in alternative ways to deliver their products to users and to stop using single-use plastics.

Hearing all these movements for taking care and saving the environment tells me to stop thinking that we already failed as humans. There are still ways to stop the Earth from dying. We can still change our ways and together, hand in hand, we can gradually help our Earth to live more for us and the future.

As what Greta Thunberg, a 15-year old Swedish environmental activist, said to the authorities and older generations, you should also make a change. Refuse single-use plastics! It can be convenient for us now but the environment won’t be as good as we want it to be in the future.

The move for the environment and our future starts today!

Davao Bamboo Sanctuary & Ecological Park: The Right Place to Fall In Love with Nature

Are you looking for a place to stay wherein you can unwind, enjoy, and connect to the beauty of nature? I recommend you to take a look at this worthy place that has fresh air, various amenities, and satisfying view; a perfect experience for you and your loved ones.

Let’s start with a glimpse of its history.
It started as a private vacation place of Mr. Rolando and Mrs. Fe de Veyra. It took them around ten (10) years to finally open the doors to the public last June 18, 2017. It was that long since the money that they spent to built the place came from their personal savings. Tough as it was, everything was made possible because of the people who showed great interest to the place.

Adding up to its overall aesthetic view is the masterful artistry of Architect Ed Viacrusis to the sanctuary’s bamboo dome. He was also the renowned architect who contributed on designing Davao City’s People’s Park and Durian Dome.

And what about the place?

Home of thirty (30) bamboo species, Davao Bamboo Sanctuary welcomes you with their serene and nature-friendly dwelling located at Purok 5, Barangay Malagos, Baguio District Calinan, Davao City.

From Davao City proper, it is almost an hour ride going to Gaisano Grand Calinan. For public transportation, you can ride an air conditioned public utility vehicle (L300) at Bankerohan Terminal for only forty (40) pesos and stop by Rose Bakeshop infront of Gaisano Calinan for their van ride that is around thirty to fifty (30-50) pesos, and it will then take you about ten (10) minutes going to the sanctuary. To avail their ride, you can contact their office to reserve a seat.

As you get there, you will be welcomed by their accommodating and friendly guards and staff. You can then get in touch with nature with the 3.5-hectare vicinity. Aside from their spot where you can unwind, Davao Bamboo Sanctuary is also a great place for pictorials. In fact, many occasions such as weddings and receptions were already held here, and also pre-nuptial and debut shoots. Such a place of versatility!

But why Bamboo?

April Faye Lee, Marketing Officer of DBS, said that the owners collected around thirty (30) different species of Bamboo that are mostly ornamental. They have both local and foreign species. Some of them are the Vine, Zigzag, Japanese, Black, White, and Pink Bamboos. Aside from its aesthetic uses, Bamboo also brings societal and environmental benefits. It is also good to protect the soil from erosion especially that the sanctuary is near the riverbank.

“Bamboo is a wonder grass that produces 35% more oxygen compared to other plants and trees and absorbs 5% more carbon dioxide”.

– Ms. April Lee (Marketing Officer)

So what are the sanctuary’s amenities?

Davao Bamboo Sanctuary is also known for their spring pool that is flowing 24/7. It has a depth of 3 ft. to 6 ft., with areas made for children and toddlers. They also made use of their fish pond to let the sanctuary’s guests experience kayaking and fishing.

Inside the dome, they also have archery and basketball.

Aside from these, they also offer room accommodations for overnight stays. And if you were not able to bring some things that are needed, they also have a canteen wherein you can buy snacks, drinks, and other basic needs.

Food is also not a problem. They offer short orders or you can pay for their buffet meal starting from 11:30am-1:30pm.

So what are their rates?

Davao Bamboo Sanctuary has a regular rate of P250 for adults and P150 for kids ages 4-10 every Monday to Sunday. Here are the rates for their wide array of facilities and features:

•Kayaking rental for 30 minutes – P220
•Gondola rental for 30 minutes – P400
•Fishing fee per 1 hour – P120
•ATV rental for 20 minutes – P550
•UTV rental for 20 minutes – P800
•Karaoke rental for 1 hour – P120
•Massage combination (Swedish and Shiatssu) – P550 per hour

As of now, they have a weekend special rate every Friday-Sunday. P600 for adults and P400 for kids ages 4-10 inclusive of pool use, kayaking, archery, table and chairs and buffet lunch.

“In the future, we are targeting December this year, we plan to open the fish spa where you can tickle your feet with a fish and the fish will remove all the callouses from your feet. And aside from that, we also plan for the foot reflexology and the sauna”.

– Ms. April Lee (Marketing Officer)

Due to additional constructions and features, there are still areas in the sanctuary that are not yet accessible. The management is also encouraging the guests to always keep the place clean.

And these are the things to expect when you plan to go to Davao Bamboo Santuary & Ecological Park. A place to conserve nature and provide home for bamboos while unwinding and enjoying the aesthetic beauty of the place itself.

Start to make a plan now and relish the chance of going to one of our nature’s gift.

Lip Tint Products: Tips on Choosing The Best One

Do you prefer using lip tints than lipsticks? Yet you’re still confused on what brand or type to use that will not just enhance but will also keep your lips healthy? Well there are few helpful tips that you can consider on choosing one.

We’re done with all that creamy and heavy-weight lipsticks. Now, we can’t deny that we’re all mesmerized with the rage in beauty lately — the lip tints, or sometimes called lip stains. Anyone can be simply obsessed with the gradient, natural, and youthful appeal that it gives. Also, it can be easily applied like a lipbalm but displays the effort of wearing a lipstick. Adding to those is that it is pigmented so a small amount is enough to cover your whole lips.

Gradually, various make up brands all over the world have started their own collection of lip tints and we Filipinos don’t want to be last in line.

“Lip tints are a staple in my everyday look. So in buying, I usually look at the price if it’s reasonable. No matter how nice it is. If it goes beyond the normal price then I would settle for a dupe or something cheaper.” — Ms. Ana Louella Navarro, LPT / Event Make-up Artist.

Yes, one thing that we can consider on choosing a lip tint is the price of it. You can compare one to the other. Sometimes both has the same effect and ingredients but are not of the same price. Remember that pricey ones are not always the best ones. Just sometimes.

“In buying, I usually consider the ingredients of it because some are made of harsh chemicals that’s really not good for sensitive lips like mine. This is why organic lip tints attract me.” — Brigitte Flor Mercene, Beauty queen/Endorser/College student

Aside from the price, another thing that is commonly considered is if it’s made of organic ingredients. Some lip tint brands use harsh chemicals that can dry or irritate your lips. And that’s a big NO NO NO.

“I’m exposed to many events so using lip tint is a go-to-product for me. I can easily put it on my lips which keeps me going whatever I do. That’s why I always choose a lip tint that will surely last long, that are of high quality and are friends-approved.” — Clarice Mariene Lara, College Student / Part-time Event Host

Something can always seem interesting when we hear a positive feedback from someone we trust or is influential. Some youtubers, for example, provide a product review vlog that will nudge some viewers to also have a try of the product.

The ingredients, popular brand name, and recommendations are not the only factors for a lip tint product to be regarded as high quality and a good one. It also depends on the type of lip tint that you’re confident and comfortable of wearing. One can go with any of these four types:

1) Liquid Lip Tints
2) Peel-off Lip Tints
3) Lip Tint Sticks
4) Matte Lip Tints

Also, lip tints have several shades to choose from that will really fit a particular skin tone. Any of these will suit you if you won’t be skeptic on giving a try.

Have you already tried using a lip tint? Do you already have a choice of brand or type? Or are you still searching for the best one? Whether it is local or not, cheap or pricey, you always have the freedom to choose what you want from lots of lip tint products available everywhere. Just keep in mind that care and confidence is what makes us all beautiful. So always choose what’s best for you.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
